Description

Southwest of Andritsaina in an imposing and rugged mountainous scenery lies the magnificent temple of Apollo Epikourious, one of the largest ancient temples. The temple is located 14 km south of Andritsaina, at an altitude of 1,130 meters, up to the Mountain Kotilio. This site in antiquity was called Bassai, which means small flat rocks.

The residents of neighboring Phigaleia who had established, from the 7th century BC, the temple of Apollo Vassita, whom they worshiped with the name of Epicurean - supporter in war or illness. The adjective Epicurean was given during the wars with Sparta around 650 BC.
